Frequently referred to as “The greatest two minutes in sports”, and “The Run for the Roses”- May 4th, 2013 will mark the 139th running of the historic Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY.
This is the first leg of horse racing’s “Triple Crown”. The Preakness stakes will run just two weeks later, on May 18th. The Belmont stakes takes place just three weeks after the Preakness.
The most recent Triple Crown winner, was “Affirmed”, in 1978.
“I’ll Have Another” was last year’s Derby winner, with a time of 2:01.83.
“Secretariat” still holds the course record with a time of 1:59.40 in 1973.

It’s February. That means only one thing. Soon the countdown will begin. Soon the madness will set in. As unstoppable as a zombie apocalypse, the most frenetic month in all of sports – The 2013 NCAA Basketball tournament – a phenomenon known simply as March Madness will set it soon.

March Madness is coming !

There will be tears of joy, tears of sorrow. The word “Cinderella” will be used more in the month of March, than it is all year long. “Bracketology”, a term specifically created just for this tournament, will be on the lips of sports fans everywhere. 68 teams will start. When the smoke clears, there shall be but one team standing alone on the mountaintop. There will be blowouts, buzzer-beaters, and unfathomable upsets. Nobody knows when it will happen, but everyone knows it will happen. Which # 1 seed will fall first ? There will be office pools, and plenty of NCAA March Madness bets. At this moment, Indiana, Florida, Michigan, Duke, and Kansas are considered the Top 5 in the Nation, while for the first time in 20 years, North Carolina, Kentucky, and UCLA are all unranked concurrently. Kentucky won the 2012 NCAA tournament.

It is coming down to the wire. Either the New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens, Atlanta Falcons, or San Francisco 49ers, will soon hoist the Lombardi trophy. As Super Bowl XLVII lurks around the corner, there are a few things to consider:

New England Patriots – If they make it to the big dance, Tom Brady will be appearing in his sixth Super Bowl, breaking a tie with John Elway for most Super Bowl appearances by an NFL quarterback. If the Patriots win the Super Bowl, Brady will be tied with Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana for most Super Bowl wins, with four.

San Francisco 49ers – If they make it, it will be the sixth time in franchise history. The Niners currently sport a flawless 5-0 record in Super Bowls. Four wins for QB Joe Montana, and one win by QB Steve Young. It may be time for Colin Kaepernick to begin carving out his own legacy as QB of the Bay area franchise.

Baltimore Ravens – In this, Ray Lewis’ final season, the Ravens are on a mission to go out with a bang. They manhandled Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts in the Wild Card round, and then upset the heavily favored Denver Broncos in the divisional playoff round. In 2001, The Ravens (and Ray Lewis) won the first and only Super Bowl they have ever played.

Atlanta Falcons – Coach Mike Smith, and QB Matt Ryan finally won their first playoff game in their 5 years together, when they pulled out a nail-biter against the Seattle Seahawks. This could also be the Swan song for future hall of fame Tight End Tony Gonzalez. After 16 seasons, he says he is “95 percent sure” this is his last season. Atlanta is 0-1 lifetime in Super Bowls.

* If the John Harbaugh coached Ravens, and Jim Harbaugh coached 49ers make it to the Super Bowl, it will be the first time in NFL history, that a pair of brothers have coached against each other in a Super Bowl.

In what has already been a quite memorable season, the finish to this NFL season should be absolutely spectacular. 11 games are in the books,

the bye weeks are over, there are only 5 games left to determine which teams will make it to the postseason dance, and which ones will be left out in the cold. There will be as much jubilation as heartbreak; as many cheers, as tears. This is what it’s all about. Both coaches and players, will have their jobs on the line. Welcome to the home stretch.

Let the most unforgiving game of musical chairs, begin.

As the saying goes, “Bets up, please”.

AFC: New England, Baltimore, Houston, and Denver, lead their divisions, and all are virtual locks to make the postseason.

Fighting for the 2 AFC Wild Card spots:

Indianapolis (7-4) – In good position, but nothing is set. Face a bitter Detroit team in week 13. Will still face Houston twice. Rookie Andrew Luck is really gonna have to show that he is the real deal.
Pittsburgh (6-5) – Riddled with injuries all season long. Bottom line, they will go nowhere w/o injured QB Ben Roethlisberger. Backup QB Charlie Batch simply cannot do it
Cincinnati (6-5) – Have won 3 straight, after having lost 4 straight. Their second 3 game win streak this season. Play 3 winnable games, before finishing out against Pittsburgh and Baltimore
Miami (5-6) – Still have to face New England twice, and have a game against San Francisco. It’s a real long shot. They can look back at the first half of the season, and wonder what could have been, if K Dan Carpenter hadn’t been so bad.

NFC: New York, Chicago, Atlanta, and San Francisco lead their divisions, and seem destined for postseason play.

Fighting for the 2 NFC Wild Card spots:

Green Bay (7-4) – Had won 5 straight before losing to NY Giants in Week 12. No cakewalk – Still have 2 games against Minnesota, as well as another tilt with both Chicago and Detroit. May still overtake Chicago, and win their division
Minnesota (6-5) – Will probably seal their own fate, if they are not able to win at least one of two remaining games vs Green Bay. That said, they also have to play Chicago and Houston. Tough road.
Tampa Bay (6-5) – Tough games against Denver and New Orleans coming up. Face Atlanta in final game of season. A lot of pressure for a young team.
Seattle (6-5) – Two tough games will be Chicago and San Francisco. If they cannot win games against Arizona, Buffalo, and St. Louis, they do not deserve to make the postseason, nor will they.

Clinging to life, with 5-6 records – Dallas, Washington, New Orleans
